The Worst Idea Since Almost Sliced Bread

In at least one previous blog I have mentioned almost sliced bread and promised and explanation. Today is the day. It is as it sounds, almost sliced. As with most things here, bread is different. It is a little bit sweet, and tougher than loaf bread back home. It is also placed in the bag from the top and not the side. Every bakery has a slightly different version of loaf bread and they all have their strong points and weak points. The closest approximation in taste and texture is almost sliced bread.

I have tried bread from several different places now and there is no doubt that almost sliced bread is the best. It has the drawback however of an eighth of an inch of crust at the bottom that remains intact. Why do they do this? The best explanation that we have been able to attain is that it is easier to put it in the bag that way.

This is an area where good ole American consumerism could really benefit this place. Imagine if for some reason your favorite loaf bread company stopped slicing all the way through. How long would you continue to purchase it? How long would they remain in business? I for one am not that loyal to any bread. I would simply choose to move my number two bread up to number one and let that be that.

Here though, they have you either way you go. You can purchase good taste and texture and deal with having to tear up your slice of bread to get it out of the bag, or you can purchase tough less palatable bread that is sliced all the way and pay considerably more.

You may be reading this and think that it is no big deal if the bread remains slightly connected, but let me assure you that it is a big deal. Remember the bread is inserted from the top so in order to finish slicing it yourself, you have to take the entire loaf out of the bag, cut, and place it back in the bag. One can attempt to tear one piece at a time out, but one invariably comes out with half a piece of bread rather than an entire piece. It is frustrating.

I am going to start a new phrase around here as soon as I learn how to say it, "That is the worst idea since almost sliced bread."

Not sure about the worst idea of all times...but I'm sure it involves rednecks and "hold my drink, let me show you something"...but I have an idea for your "almost sliced bread".

Tear each piece as you need them down near the bottom - leaving the full bottom intact. Once you have only the bottom remaining, add some butter, garlic and cheese and have yourself some tasty cheese bread! Some dippin' sauce and your ready to go. Now that's a filling meal and no wasted "almost sliced bread". LOL! :-)

Enjoy! Toby
