Sticks And Stone May Break My Bones But........

Over the weekend a couple of friends and I spent some time with several deaf acquaintences. Having very little means of communication, it became obvious to us that we were going to have to develop some means of referring to our new deaf friends. We could not really ask them what their names were so we named them ourselves.

We named them after people they reminded us of and most were named for movie or television characters. We named two Jerry and Elaine (Seinfeld) we named three more Napoleon, Pedro, and Debbie (Napoleon Dynamite). After we did this we wondered if we had gone too far in having fun with naming them.

Toward the end of our trip it became obvious that the deaf people had similar difficulties in referring to us. One guy came to us and signed to us until we understood what they had named us. Once we saw the signs they had given to refer to us we did not feel too bad about naming them after movie and tv characters. We were: Long nose, Chin, and Harry Arms.

? of the day for a nickname you can never shake, what do you think a deaf person would name you?

I'd say "shorty" but I would actually be average or maybe just above average in Asia (5'6"). LOL! Life it great for short people - we hardly ever have to duck or stoop! :-) Toby

this is the first time I've ever laughed out loud reading your posts. truly brilliant, and you didn't have to do anything but tell the simple truth.
